Scalp mesotherapy – support for the hair, Wrocław

Scalp mesotherapy consists in administering nutrient preparations directly into the dermis of the scalp, to a depth of a few millimetres. The aim of the procedure is to improve the blood supply to the area of the hair follicles and to deliver the components used in the process of hair growth: vitamins, amino acids and peptides.

The procedure is a supplement to treatment, not its basis. Hair loss is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The effectiveness of mesotherapy depends above all on whether the cause of the loss has been established and whether causal treatment is being conducted in parallel. For that reason we precede the procedure with a consultation and diagnosis.

We hold consultations and perform procedures in Wrocław at ul. Barlickiego 31/1U. Reception: 573 290 488.

Diagnosis before the procedure

During the consultation we take a history covering the duration and pace of the hair loss, past diseases, medicines taken, the course of pregnancy and the puerperium, the diet and the family history. We then examine the scalp and perform trichoscopy, that is an assessment under magnification, which makes it possible to distinguish the individual forms of alopecia.

Depending on the clinical picture we order laboratory tests. Most often these are a blood count, the ferritin level, thyroid-stimulating hormone, the vitamin D level and — in women with signs of an excess of androgens — hormonal determinations. Iron deficiency and disorders of thyroid function are among the most frequent reversible causes of hair loss, and correcting them is sometimes more effective than any procedure.

Forms of alopecia and the expected response to the procedure

Form of alopeciaCharacteristicsThe role of mesotherapy
Telogen effluviumIntense hair loss beginning 2–4 months after a triggering factor: childbirth, a febrile illness, an operation, a rapid reduction of body weight.A supplementary measure, shortening the duration of the symptoms. The basis is removing the cause.
Androgenetic alopeciaGradual thinning in the area of the crown and the frontal angles, a progressive course, a family history.A supplementary measure. The basis is pharmacological treatment conducted long-term.
Alopecia due to deficienciesIt coexists with a deficiency of iron, zinc or vitamin D.The procedure supports recovery once the deficiency has been corrected.
Alopecia areataPatches of complete hair loss with a smooth surface, an autoimmune course. It is not a method of treatment. It requires separate management established by a doctor.
Scarring alopeciaLoss of the openings of the hair follicles, irreversible changes. It is not indicated. The aim of treatment is to halt the inflammatory process.

Distinguishing the forms of alopecia matters in practice: in scarring alopecia the hair follicles are permanently destroyed and no procedure will restore hair in those places. Early diagnosis makes it possible to halt the process before it covers further areas.

The course of the procedure

  • Preparation – we perform the procedure on washed, dry skin, without styling products. Anaesthesia is usually not necessary.
  • Administration of the preparation – injections about every 1 cm over the whole surface of the thinning area, to a depth of 2–4 mm. The procedure lasts 15–25 minutes.
  • Directly after the procedure – small papules and redness are visible, resolving within a few hours.
  • Return to activities – possible the same day; the hair can be washed after 24 hours.

The series of procedures and assessment of the effect

The standard scheme covers 4–6 procedures performed every 1–2 weeks, followed by maintenance procedures every 4–8 weeks. We establish the number and frequency individually, depending on the diagnosis and the response to treatment.

Assessing the effect requires patience because of the life cycle of the hair. The first changes are observed no earlier than after 6–8 weeks, because that is how long it takes for the follicle to pass into the growth phase and for a new hair to emerge above the surface of the skin. We carry out a proper assessment after 3–6 months, comparing the trichoscopic images taken before and after treatment.

The first measurable effect is usually a reduction in the number of hairs shed over 24 hours, and only then an increase in density. Regrowth of hair in places entirely without follicles is not possible.

The two methods are sometimes used alternately within one treatment plan. The choice depends on the diagnosis, the patient’s expectations and the coexisting diseases.

Frequently asked questions

Will mesotherapy stop hair loss?

The procedure supports the rebuilding of the hair, but it does not remove the cause of the loss. If the background is iron deficiency, a thyroid disease or androgenetic alopecia, causal treatment in parallel is necessary. Mesotherapy alone gives a transient effect in such situations.

Is the procedure painful?

The sensation is one of brief pricking. The scalp is well innervated, so sensitivity is sometimes greater than in other areas; the procedure is nevertheless well tolerated and does not require anaesthesia in most patients.

After how long is the effect visible?

No earlier than after 6–8 weeks, which follows from the life cycle of the hair. We carry out a proper assessment after 3–6 months, comparing the trichoscopic images.

How many procedures are needed?

Usually 4–6 procedures every 1–2 weeks, then maintenance procedures. We establish the scheme individually after the trichoscopic assessment.

Will mesotherapy help with a receding hairline?

In androgenetic alopecia the procedure is a supplement to pharmacological treatment. In areas where the hair follicles have already disappeared, regrowth is not possible, so beginning treatment early matters.

Can the procedure be performed in pregnancy?

No. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are a contraindication. Hair loss after childbirth is most often telogen in character and resolves spontaneously within 6–12 months.

Does the hair have to be shaved before the procedure?

No. The procedure is performed without shortening the hair, on skin that is washed and dried, without styling products.
